Looking for (bio)diversity
- a bird watching guide -
Discover the fascinating world of city birds in
The Netherlands, focusing on their unique behaviors and often overlooked queer aspects of nature. Historically, queer behaviors in wildlife have been understudied.
This guide highlights the sexuality, family structures, gender roles, living environments, and reproduction of birds, challenging traditional perspectives to expand our understanding of nature’s diversity.
Birds are not confined to forests; they’re all around us, including in Dutch cities. Grab your workbook and get inspired to observe these incredible creatures in your daily life. The workbook complements the bird guide with exercises to enhance your observational skills, spark creativity, and deepen your connection to nature.
By embracing queer ecology, we highlight the interconnectedness of all beings. Observing the diverse behaviors of city birds provides insights into the complexities of nature and challenges our perceptions of sexuality and gender.

The project
consists of three elements combined in a handmade pouch. 1/3 is a thesis
titled “Egocentrism vs. Ecocentrism.” 2/3 is a bird guide that provides
information on biodiversity within birds, featuring self-made bird
illustrations. 3/3 is a workbook with activities designed to enhance
your observational skills, spark creativity, and deepen your connection
to nature (created with exercises by @marliesvanierland )
